The Masai Mara is an important National Reserve home to around 2,500 elephants. Naturally they need large amounts of space to search for food and water, but because of the effects of climate change, elephants are having to roam outside the protected boundaries.
With the expansion of agriculture and increased cattle grazing, elephant crop-raiding has become a common occurrence.
Whilst farmers try to use loud noises and things such as fire crackers to scare away the elephants, often due to fear and anger towards the species, elephants may be killed in retaliation.
This human-elephant conflict poses great threat to the population of this endangered species.
More must be done to ensure the conservation of this protected land. The number of livestock grazing within the Masai Mara has increased tenfold within the last few decades. There's a legal requirement that residents of the area should receive a percentage of the park's revenue but at the moment no money is given to the local community hence why the rules around cattle grazing are so often.
Any solution that will protect these animals in the long term will need to factor in socio economic advances for the locals.
